Race, Gender, and Sexual Orientation
Now were getting into the nitty gritty. I don't mean to offend anyone this is just my take on what the government is doing.
Well after reading our book I think the government has gone along way to prevent racial discrimination. I almost believe it is to much now a days. There is so much focus on this. The reason I say this is because for instance in the Trayvon Martin case if the kid hadn't of been African American don't think such a big deal would've been made. I believe things like this happen often. Everyone has equal rights today, so I believe its time we start working towards other problems. I believe to many people live in the past and focus on what they didn't have.
I honestly believe that as far a gender discrimination goes I wouldn't say the government does to little or to much. I know in some cases as a female we are perceived as not being able to do what men can do in some circumstances, but personally I haven't encountered to much gender discrimination in my school or workplace. I have been able to do the same jobs. Make the same as the guy standing right next to me. I'm sure there are instances of gender inequality but I think the government has come along way.
Sexual orientation is a tough one. I think the government could be doing more. Some states are allowing same sex marriages now. I think America as a whole is more open to these things then it ever thought about being 50 years ago. I believe live and let live. I may not chose to live a lifestyle, but who am I to hinder someone else who does, especially when it has no effect on me? I was raised to believe it is wrong and immoral, but I know if I had family who had different sexual preferences than me I would still love them the same.
I think the United States has come a long way in all these areas, but there is still room for improvement.

I think you have a great point concerning racial discrimination. Regarding your Trayvon Martin comment, I’ll say that if the roles were reversed we would still have media attention drawn to it (and there would be so much more controversy, in my opinion), and if he weren’t African American, but instead say, white, I think it’d still get attention because of George Zimmerman’s race—it’s almost like a double whammy. But you’re right, the media and government puts too much emphasis on racial equality and we should be past this. I also think you have great points concerning the other two topics and this was a great read!
ReplyDeleteI like your view about the Trayvon Martin case, and I agree that the news media did drag the story on and gave too much attention to the case. I also agree that our country has come a very long way in regard to all discrimination concerning race, gender, and sexual orientation. I do disagree with your view on gender discrimination. I think that our society still sees women as being inferior to men, we still have not achieved true equal pay, and there are cases all the time about gender discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace. I agree with your thoughts on sexual orientation. I think that the government should not interfere with personal matters, but I think they should not allow discrimination to happen against people with different sexual orientations.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree on all accounts. I believe that too much emphasis on race and ethnicity is placed, especially in regards to the news. It is because of the media, that the people continue to be fixated on the color of someone skin. Rather than just informing the people of what they need to know, they are highlighting irrelevant details. As far as gender inequality, I too have never experienced any. I feel that I have the same opportunities as anyone else, and if I felt differently it would be up to me to speak up on it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your ideas on sexual orientation. A persons sexual preference is their own personal business, although it may seem right to some and wrong to others, people should have a choice in how they wish to live their lives. I personally do not agree with same sex marriage due to religious beliefs, but it isn't our government's job to dictate someones life style if it isn't inflicting harm on others. I will say that I do believe that the way the media tries to force same sex marriage on us is wrong. If someone want's to marry someone of the same gender they can just go right ahead, but they don't have to try and force everyone to accept it as they do.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Make it legal if you want but don't expect everyone to agree it's right or accept it.
DeleteI agree with you that while the government did an exceptional job in improving equality between the races, but now that we have reached this point, they should step down and focus on more critical subjects for today's world. I also have not been effected by gender discrimination or seen it effect anyone that I know personally. There will always be some cases, but that is true for any type of discrimination and our government seems to be handling it well. Finally, I agree that the goevrnment should do more along the lines of justifying sexual orientation- I think that 40 or so years from now, those disputes will be generally accepted and a part of history will be made just like we study integration today.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with you on that issue indeed. There are bad people of all races. It shouldn't always be made into a racial issue.People need to be held accountable for their actions and their responses. As far as marriage or sexual relations I firmly believe that it is the people involved choices it is their right no one has the right to judge others if they put into their own lives as much attention as they do to others their lives would be so much better. I believe in the 1960's alot of bad things happened but a lot of good changes came about in our nation.
ReplyDeleteI love how you say your thought on sexual orientation. I also was brought up that it was wrong, but I am not going to judge someone for their decisions, that is God's place. I also agree with you on racial and gender discrimination. I myself haven't encountered that situation but my mom was put in one. The company can say things and make it not look like discrimination so its hard to actually catch discrimination of gender. Racism has come along way! We can go to school, shop, eat with other races now and back then it was forbidden. Great Blog!
ReplyDeleteRacial discrimination is wrong, and there are times that I too have wondered if we would here about acts of violence against a white man or woman. The sad part about the entire thing is that as a nation, I feel that we think we have to continually pay for our fathers' past sins of slavery. We didn't own the slaves, and we do not practice this today.
ReplyDeleteI think that women should be treated as equals. However, I also believe that there are limits that women should respect on some levels.
I believe that homosexuality is wrong. However, I was also raised that you love the person even if you don't approve or believe in their choice. I do not think that the right to marry should be awarded.
The media is always pouncing on stories that involve white on black crime or white on any other gender crime for that matter. This is why people believe there is so much racism out there when really there isn't. I'm on the same page with you on the gender topic because I've only encountered fair working environments. We women are allowed the same rights as men. What else is there left to do?
ReplyDeleteI agree that while I don't agree with gay marriage I'm not going to be out protesting the streets against them or going out voting against them and making their lives miserable. As long as they're not hurting anyone, then I'll keep myself out of the matter.
I can see where your coming from on your racial discrimination opinion but you also have to take into consideration why the trayvon martin situation blew up, it's because he was black. i believe that if that would have been a white kid walking the streets he wouldn't have been shot, i think that trayvon martin was killed because george zimmerman saw a black kid walking the streets and thought he was going to do something bad.
ReplyDeleteI think the posts I agreed with most was the racial discrimination. I also feel that the Treyvon Martin case is a key point. We had the Christian-Newsome case here in the United States that did not get near the coverage, well, any coverage at all for that matter that should of been considered just as bad if not worse. I feel like people try to live in the past to get more today, and that is just abusing the system, which the government has allowed.
