Federalism
The first topic of discussion is whether a strong national government is necessary or should state governments have an equal share of power. I favor more with the share of power. I absolutely agree with a lot of the national laws and such. I believe it the United States wouldn't be "United" without things like the Bill of Rights. However I believe it is necessary for states to share that power. People's needs are different, and I believe the states having their own laws is a way for the state to protect its people. I also think the state government having power keeps the national government from obtaining to much power.
During the Great Depression the nation needed help. Everyone was in trouble and it was necessary for the government to step in and help them. Reagan sought to reduce power as he agreed with New Federalism, and the voters were weary about the amount of power the government had. He viewed government as the problem, and not the solution. I believe the shift was appropriate according to what was going on in America at the time.
I think education should be the responsibility of regulating education should be in the national governments hands. Do I think they are necessarily doing the best job at it, no! I think it makes the most sense for them to regulate it. That way everyone has an opportunity for a good education. I believe all states standards should be the same. I went to school in Indiana for four years, and when I got there I was so behind. They had learned things I hadn't even heard of. Clearly they had received a better education. When I came back to Tennessee I was repeating things in the eleventh grade that I'd done in the eighth and ninth grade.

I agree with you concerning the role of national government keeping us "united", and I definitely feel that the powers should be more balanced as the state officials are better equipped to make the decisions that affect the people in their state. The Great Depression had many issues, but I feel that the national government was too present in the solutions. I am convinced that they were the problem. As far as the educational issue, I think this should be state level. The national government is too concerned bout scores to compare to other nations to be concerned about our children.
ReplyDeleteI think that in regarding to national and state power that the national government should be stronger. I do agree that during the Great Depression the nation needed help and that a strong national government was necessary at the time, and that afterward the shift in power was appropriate. I also completely agree that the national government should regulate education, however, I do think that the state governments should play some role in local education.
ReplyDeleteI also think local government should play a role in education. I just strongly believe that K-12 no matter where you live should have the same standards. I want my children to have to same opportunities as every other child in America. Think about all the schools that are lacking, and the children who keep getting passed along who haven't learned what is necessary for them to succeed.
ReplyDeleteI commented on Carrie Davis, Rickah Herrell, and Bailey Thompsons blog.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that people's needs are different in each state, and that each state should have the power to adhere to their citizens. I also agree with you that there are times where the national government becomes too powerful when they shouldn't. In terms of education, I think you have a good point about the education system and how different states may be behind or ahead others--I agree that if anything they need to remain on the same level as every other state so citizens do not get behind or fail due to previous education in a different area.
ReplyDeleteEveryone should have the right to a good education. I feel very strong about children being able to go to school and parents being able to afford it. Some states are ahead of others because they have good teachers and some of those teachers are paid well. The children shouldn't have to suffer because the national government and the local government and states can not get it together for the betterment of the children.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about how the powers should be shared more than having an extraordinarily strong national government. The states' power is important so each state's needs are better met- just like you said. Education standards should definitely be the same throughout all of the states, but I think some states should have certain limited powers in their educational systems as well.
ReplyDeleteI agree that there should be some national regulation over schools but I believe most of the power should be in the state. Learning the same things across the country is good but expecting kids to all learn the same way is bad and that is what I am seeing happen. Another dilemma about equal education is the fact that each school has a different budget. The book even noted the difference how states like New York pay way more per student than some other states. The federal government only provides about 10% of the school budget and most if not all that money just goes to the materials needed to implement the programs required when accepting the aid. I would prefer most of the regulating to go through the states but if the national government insists on a national standard then they should be the ones funding the schools 100%.
ReplyDeleteI agree and disagree. I believe that the states should have their own authority of what exactly goes on in their schools. If education is kept under a smaller microscope, the more likely smaller things will be noticed and not just looked over like they way they more probably would at a national level. But I do believe that that national government could offer some guidelines, to help states further their educational advancements.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on the Government and states should equally share power. i also agree that we needed the Government during the depression. I disagree about the education part, although I understand where your coming from. I believe that each state should regulate education. I think this because i feel like the states have a better grasp on what should be taught rather than the National Government.
